Culture Freaks

I see trees of green,
red roses too.
I see them bloom,
for me and you.
And I think to myself,
what a wonderful world.

- Louis Armstrong, 1967 -

Armstrong sees the trees in green colour and roses in red colour. That was HIS view. To him, THAT was what a "wonderful world" looked like. Why? Maybe because in general, trees are considered green and roses are red, even though they come in various colours too. But, have you ever considered that maybe it was his culture that influenced him to think like that?
……………………….

So while you ponder on that, let us introduce ourselves. Assalamualaikum w.b.t and Hi! We are Belle and Ima, and we’re the creators of this blog; a.k.a. the “freaksofculture”. Here’s what you need to know about us.

We’re Malaysians, Malays, students (IIUM), English for International Communication majors and a couple of awkwardly yet fun human beings who are very interested in learning in depth about cultures.

– Malay Culture –

Our culture has its own uniqueness like any other culture out there. Here’s a few, we…
  • ·      Eat rice almost every day.
  • ·      Give salam (shake hands)
  • ·      Use our right hand to eat, pass things and etc.
  • ·      Give a slight bow when leaving, entering or passing by people (especially the people who are older than us; age and/or status)
  • ·      Do not point with our index finger, instead we use our thumb
  • ·      And many more

For a better understanding or grasp of our culture (specifically “Malaysians”), this fun video may help.

– This Blog –

As can be seen from the title, our url and the above introduction, this blog is dedicated to learn and share more about culture. This blog is part of our assignment to not only share what we know but also gain any new stuff from all you. So feel free to leave a comment here, we won’t bite J

As time progresses, every week we will post new things about culture. In fact, you should stay tune for the “My I-Friend” segment. It's a fun and interesting segment in which we (Ima and Belle) will take up the challenge and make a new friend with a different cultural background than us. From then on, we will keep you guys updated with posts by sharing the new things we’ll learn from him/her.

We'll end out post today with, it is indeed a "Wonderful world".

  1. Hello guys! Hi!

What a great intro from you guys. :)
I watched the video that you posted. It's an interesting one. Funny, but at the same time the message is successfully conveyed. I like it when they highlighted that it is not always the beautiful/good things that make us Malaysian, but the ungly, noisy things that prove we are all the same people :')

Look for the similarities that can unite us, not the differences that can break us apart, right? :) That's the beauty that we should find in communication across cultures, so that we could always manage to solve the conflicts arise :)

Looking forward your next posts, Ima & Belle! I am sure it will be interesting as well.

    Love, Nana & Shiffa ;)
